a family cottage

We are Dan and Emma. Alongside Starlight Hideaway, our shepherd’s hut in Skeffling, we look after Rorty Crankle. The cottage has been in our family for a while now, and we love it.

It is an old Yorkshire cottage with bags of character: exposed beams, thick stone walls and a wood-burning stove in the inglenook fireplace. We have furnished it to be a comfortable, relaxed base for families and friends, with plenty of room to spread out after a day on the moors or the coast.

Thornton-le-Dale is one of the most charming villages in England, and you are right in the middle of everything: the North York Moors on your doorstep, Dalby Forest three miles away, the coast a comfortable drive and Pickering, with its famous steam railway, just down the road.

Having stayed in plenty of holiday cottages ourselves as a family, we know how much the little things matter. We have put together a welcome guide with our favourite places to eat, the best days out and everything worth knowing about the cottage, so you can take your time, settle in and feel completely at home.
